We are a small rattery located in McMinns Lagoon, NT. McMinns Lagoon is outside of Palmerston, just past Coolalinga.
The rattery is run by me, Dimmie, and I am a rat-obsessed, 20 year old woman who currently studies Disability Work at Charles Darwin University. I was first introduced to the concept of rats as pets by my boyfriend, Matt, who kept female rats when he was young. I was at first repulsed and disliked rats, and one day I decided to get a pair. They were a pair of does named Pidge and Soap. Aaaah, it's all making sense now, isn't it!
After Pidge and Soap came into my life I was bitten with the GGMR Bug. Otherwise known as: The Gotta Get More Rats Bug. Two more does, Mischa and Clarice, came into my life, as well as my first buck, Anniba.
Not satiated, a few months later I bought home two more bucks, Limpet and Nacho. At this time I flew from Brisbane back to Darwin due to health reasons and to be nearer to my immediate family.
A few weeks after I returned to Darwin, yet another two bucks came home with me from a feeder tank. Zerello and Escapee (who is aptly named I might add). Shortly after their arrival, Pidge's already fragile health took a turn for the worse and she passed away in July 2007.
Heart broken, I settled down with my eight remaining rats until our neighbour found a black hooded doe in the garden. I named her Kererû, which is the Maori word for "pigeon". She is uncannily like Pidge in personality, so I feel I chose her name well.
When I'm not talking about rats, I can be found skulking around online, being geeky and generally hanging out in the dozens of forums and IRC channels I'm part of. I'm also a volunteer with Carers NT, where my mum works, and have an avid interest in body modification.
I also run an online discussion and support forum for Australians with mental illness. Next to rats, raising awareness of mental illness is my biggest passion.
I am an artist, and a writer, but rarely have time anymore.
Now that you know a bit about me, you can navigate your way around the site to meet my rats and learn about rats, and why they make great pets!
